Founder and Director, HerCanberra
I never dreamed of being an entrepreneur. Growing up in a small town, I'd never really thought past the 'traditional' career paths, but owning my own business has allowed me to accomplish things I had only ever dreamed of. By becoming a Rare Birds Ambassador, I hope I can help other Canberra women realise their entrepreneurial potential in what is still a predominantly public service town. I want to provide them with advice and inspiration to help them on their own journeys, because I see it as my responsibility to help other women up the ladder.
In 2011, after enjoying a diverse career in public relations and media, Amanda Whitley launched www.hercanberra.com.au, a website for local women. As at December 2016, it has a monthly unique readership of 125 000 and a social network exceeding 60 000 followers. Quite a feat in a city with less than 400, 000 people! HerCanberra provides a resource which tells the city's stories, highlights things to do, facilitates connections, and encourages people to engage with their city as a great place to live. HerCanberra has grown to be one of Canberra’s leading media brands, also boasting a quarterly hard-copy publication, Magazine; online bridal magazine and event, UNVEILED: and 'Click + Connect' event series, aimed at helping Canberra women make social connections. Amanda is 2016 ACT Woman of the Year.
