Welcome Rare Birds

We are launching! And you are invited to fly high and fly fast with Rare Birds.

This time we thought big, I mean seriously big from day one. Global. Scalable. Fast. Smart.

Our goals – 3 countries, 1,000,000 community members, 50,000 books printed and distributed per annum, 500 online stories. Rare Birds books in 5500 school libraries across Australia and the globe, to educate 200,000 regional and rural entrepreneurs online, to have entrepreneurship and innovation vocational learning for 8-18 year-olds aspiring to become entrepreneurs.

This is our moonshot for 2017.

The vision is clear: “1,000,000 more women entrepreneurs globally by 2020”.

The mission is incredibly simple: “give every woman globally the opportunity to become an entrepreneur by choice”.

I had no background or experience in publishing a book (an ambitious one at that and profiling the journey of 50 of Australia’s most Influential Women Entrepreneurs) or launching a digital content and publishing driven community site. Certainly, nothing I learnt in school. I never attended University. Not one single person (thousands did) or institution taught me how to create things from nothing or how to be an entrepreneur – I don’t have the expertise to do either with much perfection. However I believe progress trumps perfection and attitude trumps talent.

What I (amd this incredible tribe of women entrepreneurs) have is the guts to try and enough courage to ask for guidance and help when I need it. I know how to surround myself with extraordinary men and women. I know my thirst for learning is insatiable, my curiosity immeasurable, and my determination to get stuff done is unstoppable (sometimes quite scary for those that know me).

What I do with conviction is back and support myself. An entrepreneur that knows lots about things, that chooses a pathway every single day. I choose to invest in myself and invest in the potential of others, especially entrepreneurs – those emerging from the grass, aspiring and dreaming, those that have the “why,” but haven’t nailed the “how,” and those that want someone to believe in them enough that they will believe in themselves.

Welcome to Rare Birds and www.inspiringrarebirds.com. It’s been only 12 months since I dreamt of how I was going to change the landscape for: current and future women entrepreneurs globally including the next generation of little girls and boys. It’s so important that they see and believe that being an entrepreneur is a choice, and that the choice can be made while still in school. It’s been merely 27 weeks since we started building the juggernaught and the story of Rare Birds – the true essence of a entrepreneur’s bootstrapped lean start-up.

I wanted to make sure I walked the talk with this build. That we found the best players in the world, that we worked lean, that we scoured the planet for the best tools and resources so we could be be smarter, faster, more efficient and create greater impact.

I have literally had thousands of conversations about Rare Birds with industry potential investors, partners and sponsors, entrepreneurs, government, educators and academics, emerging entrepreneurs, thought leaders, corporate champions, and family and friends.

I wanted to have thousands of conversations. I wanted to know what people really thought about entrepreneurship in Australia, and globally, what we are doing well and what we are stuffing up.

Also what government, industry, councils, leaders, investors, and money people are missing, what they have hit the nail on the head with. I wanted to know why women are starting businesses in droves, why school girls don’t know what an entrepreneur is, and why primary and high school principals can’t name an Australian entrepreneur, male or women. I wanted to know why women who lead entrepreneurial ventures are getting “growth stuck,” and why so few are scaling globally.

Rare Birds is your tribe. A place where you can be part of the conversation, where there is no superiority or inferiority complexes. Where you can learn, grow, mentor, be mentored, find funding, be an investor, attend events, buy a fantastic book and gift that to a school girl and to a school, and see absolutely no barriers to entry to becoming the entrepreneur you want to be.

What’s important to you and to us:

  1. It’s your duty to share with us, provide your authentic, real experiences. Your unique experiences.
  2. Celebrate. Tell us what is going on in your world so we can illuminate you and your successes. We want the world’s eyes on you!
  3. Our values are seriously critical and we ask that you respect them in your journey with us.
  4. Men are part of the tribe. We welcome them to the conversation and we most especially welcome the male luminaries to Rare Birds.
  5. We love great conversation, we cherish all opinions and thoughts, but we don’t agree with personal attack.
  6. Most importantly – this is your voice, and your voice strengthens our voice. Use all of our handles and hashtags to RSS feed: #ifshecanican #inspiringrarebirds

Debra Fenwick – Office Manager at Mercuri Urval Sydney, Australia

After reading about Job Capital and Inspiring Rare Birds I thought of my own two daughters both in their 20's and thought how wonderful it would be for them to have a mentor to embrace and learn from collaboratively. I would like to congratulate you on your achievements and going with your "gut" instinct and taking a risk by believing in yourself. Well done! I will buy your book as a gift to my girls and hopefully they will also be inspired by you.

"Put simply, Jo Burston is a smart business leader. Jo fearlessly empowers and challenges women to change the world by breaking down barriers, tapping into their entrepreneurial spirit and taking control of their lives. Personally, I find her passion to create change and opportunities for women courageous and compelling.
